The short definition
A natal chart is a 360° wheel showing the zodiac positions of the Sun, Moon, and planets — plus the horizon and the houses — for the exact date, time, and place of your birth. "Natal" simply means "relating to birth."
What it's built from
The chart is pure astronomy first: given your birth moment and location, the positions of every body in the solar system are calculated and plotted around the zodiac belt. Astrology is the layer of meaning traditionally assigned to those positions.
What it shows
- Planets — ten or so drives and functions (identity, emotion, communication, love, drive…). See planet-in-sign meanings.
- Signs — the style each planet expresses through.
- Houses — the life areas each planet operates in. See the houses guide.
- Aspects — the angular relationships that link planets together. See the aspects guide.
Natal chart vs. horoscope vs. birth chart
"Birth chart" is a synonym for natal chart. A "horoscope" can mean the same wheel, but in everyday use it usually refers to the short Sun-sign forecasts in magazines — which use only one factor out of dozens. A full natal chart is far richer. To go deeper, read how to read your birth chart.

Is a natal chart the same as a birth chart?
Yes — they are two names for the same thing: a map of the sky at the moment and place you were born.
What do I need to calculate a natal chart?
Your date of birth, exact time of birth, and place of birth. The time and place are what allow the houses and Rising sign to be calculated.
Can I get my natal chart for free?
Yes. AskCelesta generates your full natal chart for free in an interactive solar-system view, with no signup.
